Waste, Recycling, and Transfer Station

Guidelines and Schedule

The Public Works Yard located at 665 Charles Street accepts residential brush, leaf and yard waste, Electronic waste, scrap metal and white bulk styrofoam.

This service is provided free of charge to Town residents only. Please bring proof of residency. Business and contractor material will not be accepted. The Public Works Yard is accessible for disposal drop offs via the James A. Brennan Rd entrance.

Important: Before bringing an old fridge, freezer, dehumidifier, etc. that contains a refrigerant, the refrigerant/Freon must be removed by a certified professional and tagged. Items not tagged will not be accepted.  

Lumber is no longer accepted in the brush pile.

Please note that The Town of Gananoque does not have a landfill site. Unwanted items will be accepted from residents of Gananoque at the following:

Garbage Bag Tags

Each garbage bag to be collected must have a bag tag on it. Tags cost $2.50 each and can be purchased at any of the following locations:

  • Town Hall – 30 King Street E. (only debit or cheque accepted)
  • Metro – 333 King Street E.
  • Home Hardware – 875 Stone Street N.
  • Shoppers Convenience – 400 King Street W.
  • Whites Grocery – 91 Stone Street 

Electronic Waste Recycling Program

The Town of Gananoque initiated their Electronic Waste Recycling Program in January 2011. Reports indicate that more than 50 million tonnes of e-waste globally is discarded each year with only 17% of it being recycled. Residents are encouraged to drop off their accepted e-waste items at no cost (see list here for accepted material) at the Public Works yard by accessing the site at the end of James A. Brennan Road during the following days from 8:00am – 12:00pm (except for Holidays):

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Household Hazardous Waste material such as oil, gas, paint, cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent light bulbs, etc is not accepted in regular waste disposal. Hazardous Waste must be disposed of properly at special events throughout the summer. The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville holds special hazardous waste disposal events throughout the summer. The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville holds hazardous waste disposal events in July, August and September. 

Town of Gananoque Residents can dispose of their hazardous waste free of charge.
